wounded bird flies again

It was a windy and cold day in December, a gray day without the snow or sunshine when Tha spotted a sparrow on the street. She tried to shoo the bird away. She wanted the little sparrow to find a safer place, like a branch on a tree, but the bird didn’t move.

Realizing that the tiny beak must have been hit by a car, Tha got off her bike and came closer. Still, the sparrow did not move.

It was very possible that another vehicle would whiz by without regard for the sparrow, so Tha decided to take the little bird home.

As Tha came even closer, the little sparrow jumped away in panic. Tha offered her large blue scarf and moved away. Soon the sparrow made this comfortable bundle into its new nest. Tha carried the blue nest home, and placed it in an empty shoe box.

It was becoming dark quickly, and the sparrow remained quiet all night long. This silence started to worry Tha. Would the bird survive, she wondered. There had been some blood coming out of the sparrow’s beak. It could not move one of its wings, and it breathed with difficulty.

Early the following morning, trying to please the little sparrow, Tha placed its makeshift nest on the sill of an open window. In the garden below, the air was filled with exuberance of birdsong. It did not take long before Tha heard some shuffling noise coming from inside the box.

Hopeful that the feathery stardust might survive, Tha carried the shoe box to the vet.

When they opened the box, the sparrow flew out and landed on a branch of a decorated Christmas tree. Tha stood in awe of this very special moment. The recovery of the little beak was the best gift she had ever received.
